The Situation
In November 2025, StructSolve Engineering was contacted following a vehicle impact at a single-family residence. The home, approximately nine years old, sustained damage to the southeastern wall of the structure. While temporary shoring had been installed to stabilize a displaced steel beam, no permanent corrective measures had yet been undertaken.
The homeowner sought a comprehensive engineering evaluation to determine the extent of structural damage and understand what repairs were necessary to restore the home's integrity.
What We Observed
The vehicle struck the southeastern corner of the garage area, damaging the downspout, exterior siding, and an adjacent air-conditioning condenser.
More critically, a significant vertical fracture was identified at the interface between the garage foundation wall and the southeastern foundation wall of the main dwelling. Based on crack orientation and displacement patterns, the fracture likely propagated inward at approximately a 45-degree angle between the intersecting wall segments.
The window well assembly sustained extensive structural damage. All three wall segments exhibited distress, with outer and western walls deflecting inward. Large portions of the outer and eastern walls were missing, exposing reinforcing steel. The window well had been displaced laterally inward and requires full replacement.
The steel I-beam, which provides structural support to the floor system above, had been displaced approximately seven inches inward, penetrating the drywall in the stairwell.
The Outcome
Corrective measures were outlined to address both the compromised foundation wall and the displaced structural steel beam:
- Foundation wall: Full replacement required. Extent of reconstruction to be determined following removal of basement finishes.
- Window well: Full replacement recommended concurrently with wall reconstruction.
- Steel I-beam: Must be returned to proper bearing position using hydraulic jacks and temporary shoring, then repositioned mechanically. Structural epoxy to restore top plate continuity.
- Sill plate: Repair or replacement required above the impact wall.
