A Homeowner Questions His Home's Structural Integrity

February 23, 20262 min read

“I just wanted clarity on what we can and can’t do with the structure — and StructSolve delivered thoughtful, thorough insight I could trust."
- Darin, Homeowner

The Situation

crack in the base

This project started when a homeowner called about fixing up a 100-year-old farmhouse. He had recently hired StructSolve Engineering to check the home’s foundation and overall structure so he could understand its condition before starting any renovations.

Because the house is so old and its condition wasn’t clear, Darin wanted an honest and unbiased evaluation. He needed clear information to feel confident about what to do next, whether that meant making repairs, upgrading parts of the home, or bringing in contractors.

Understanding the Home’s Structure

StructSolve inspected the home, focusing mostly on the foundation, but also looking at other important structural parts. The goal was to record what they saw on-site and figure out if there were any serious issues that could affect future renovations or require repairs.

During the visit, they carefully checked the foundation and any visible framing, looking for signs of damage or problems that might impact future improvements.

Darin said the StructSolve team was friendly and easy to talk to. They took the time to answer his questions while also doing a detailed and careful inspection.

Findings From the On-Site Evaluation

The inspection showed that even though the home is old, it helped answer many of Darin’s questions about the foundation and how it’s holding up. It also made it clear what was already known about the house and what decisions would still need help from contractors or builders.

At the time, there weren’t many details about long-term plans or future work. But the assessment gave Darin a better understanding of the home and helped him decide what steps to take next.

Recommendations Focused on Monitoring and Prevention

Instead of telling the homeowner to make repairs right away, the report gave him helpful information so he could plan his renovation with confidence. It explained the current condition of the home and pointed out important structural things to keep in mind moving forward.

Since contractors and builders hadn’t been brought in yet, details like costs, timing, and how the work would be done will be decided later once those experts are involved.

The assessment also helped Darin feel more confident about moving forward, because he now understood where there might be structural concerns and how to handle them.

Why a Structural Assessment Matters

Corner of the home being tested

This example shows how helpful it is to get a professional, unbiased engineering evaluation early in the planning process. Without it, homeowners might make renovation decisions without fully understanding the condition of their home.

A neutral structural assessment gives clear, reliable information, reduces guesswork, and helps people make decisions based on facts instead of assumptions.
